When the fire for you

burns in my belly

and I’m in tears

how could I

deny my love?

The disease I conceal

lies revealed.

Stubborn-hearted

tethered by lust

I steel myself

to do battle

with my desire.

Friends, God

knows how my people

wrong me in

my absence.

My love for ʿAblah

is driving me

to my grave

yet my sword

remains steely—

my courage great.

Daughter of Mālik,

sleep is forbidden me.

How could I sleep

on this bed of coals?

I’ll weep till the birds

hear of my misery

and the turtledoves coo

my elegy.

I’ll kiss the ground

wherever you’re camped.

May its tearstained sands

dampen the fires

that consume me.

ʿAblah, my cousin,

you traveled off

and left my heart

to wander the tracks

of your camel train

and beckon back

your escorts.

Daughter of Mālik,

my enemies relish

my defeat

but nothing can

vanquish my love.
